Homework 3
This homework will be on Chapter 3. This assignment has 4 problems instead of 5 like the last few homeworks.
LaTeX: This week we’ll work with lists in our document. There was a list before, in Homework 0 (for the questions about yourself), so this will be your second chance to try using lists.
Please create a LaTeX document with the following code.
This week we’re adding the enumitem
package to give us some additional list options.

LaTeX: Numbered lists can be created with

command. If you’re familiar with HTML this is like<ol>
for an ordered list<li>
for each list item.Observe that we set the label of our lists using

to make it use Roman numerals, and parentheses (just to match the textbook). We could have used other formats and punctuation, e.g.,label={\Alph*:}
to getA:, B:, C:,...
. There are many more options, described in theenumitem

LaTeX: We can use an underscore

(on most keyboards, press the Shift key and the-
(minus) key) in order to produce subscript text such as$a_n$

Prove, using induction: For all \(k \in \mathbf{N}\), \(5^k+3\) is divisible by \(4\).
Make sure you remember the definition of “divisible” from page 7 of the textbook. We say \(m\) is divisible by \(n\) if there is some integer \(j\) such that \(m=jn\). In this case, saying that \(5^k+3\) is divisible by \(4\) means that \(5^k+3 = 4j\) for some integer \(j\).

Hint: How can we get from \(5^k\) to \(5^{k+1}\)? What operation can we do to \(5^k\) to make it into \(5^{k+1}\)?
LaTeX: Typing
$5^k$
gives you \(5^k\), but how do you get \(5^{k+1}\)? If you try$5^k+1$
you will get \(5^k+1\) instead of \(5^{k+1}\).To get \(5^{k+1}\), you will need to group together the
k+1
using braces ({...}
) like this:$5^{k+1}$
.
